Every Minecraft survival base needs a Nether portal, but the default 2x3 obsidian frame can look a bit... rectangular. If you're going for a more mystical or high-tech aesthetic, a circular portal is the ultimate build upgrade.
While the "portal blocks" themselves must still be rectangular in most versions of the game, you can use circular framing and decorative techniques to create the illusion of a massive, glowing round portal. Here's how to master the look.
The Science of "Round" Portals
In Minecraft, a Nether portal can be as large as 23x23. This gives you plenty of room to hide a rectangular portal inside a much larger circular structure. By using our circle generator, you can find the perfect outline to frame your portal blocks.
The Illusion Technique
- Build a Large Circular Frame: Use obsidian, crying obsidian, or gilded blackstone for the rim. A diameter of 15 or 17 blocks is perfect.
- Tile the Interior: Fill the space inside the circle with portal blocks (using flint and steel on the bottom-most internal obsidian layer).
- Mask the Edges: Use stairs, slabs, and decorative blocks to "round off" the corners where the portal blocks meet the circular frame. From a distance, it will look like a perfect sphere of purple energy.
📐 Best Diameters for Portals
- Small (7 Blocks): Fit for a compact storage room or hidden alcove.
- Medium (15 Blocks): The "Golden Standard" for main base portals.
- Grand (23Blocks): Maximum portal size for truly epic entrance halls.
Design Ideas: Dimensions Beyond
The Nether "Eye" Portal
Create a 17-block circular frame. Use Crying Obsidian for the outer ring and regular obsidian for the inner frame. Add "veins" of red nether brick and magma blocks spreading out from the circle onto your walls. The glowing purple portal becomes the "pupil" of a giant, interdimensional eye.
The End "Void" Gate
For your End dimension Hub, circles are even more thematic. Build a floating circular platform using End Stone Bricks and Purpur. In the center, create a vertical circular frame. Instead of a nether portal, fill the center with black concrete, coal blocks, and end rods to simulate star-filled space. Place your actual portal (or an End city portal) at the very center.
✨ Decoration Tip: Particle Effects
Hide Suspicious Sand or Soul Sand with bubble columns behind your circular frame to create rising particles that add to the "magical energy" look of the portal.
Using the Generator for Portal Frames
To get a perfectly symmetrical frame, use the Outline mode on our generator. If you want a chunky, heavy-duty frame, switch to Thick Outline with a thickness of 2. This creates depth and allows you to place torches or lanterns directly into the frame.
